Science Teachers in Ed Partnerships
Silver Falls State Park
Siskiyou Environmental Education Center (SEEC)
The Siskiyou Environmental Education Center (SEEC) provides environmental education through two services. One is an outdoor environmental education program that takes place each fall, called Fall in the Field. The other is through Natural Science Kits that local teachers can check out for a few weeks at a time, free of charge, to enrich their curriculum in the classroom.
Fall in the Field is a place-based capstone experience for graduate students in the Master of Science in Environmental Education program at Southern Oregon University. Each cohort designs residential and non-residential environmental education programs and delivers them each fall. This allows emerging environmental educators to put into practice what they have learned in the program and provide a much needed opportunity to students throughout Southern Oregon.
The residential and day programs are offered at several field sites. Residential programs are held at the Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education in Selma, Oregon. Day programs are offered at the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument off of Hwy 66 near the Green Springs Summit, and at Ashland Pond in Ashland, Oregon. All programs are aligned to interdisciplinary state standards including Science, English, Math, Social Sciences, and much more.
Every Cohort brings their own flavor to the Fall in the Field experience. This year’s theme is "From Mountains to Monarchs: Find Your Place." One of the main goals of Environmental Education is for students to understand their place in the world. Connecting to nature, whether it is one's own backyard or a special place deep in the wilderness, provides an opportunity for people to be inspired by knowledge gained outdoors. This year's program integrates citizen science and service learning into interdisciplinary lessons designed to connect students to themselves and their surrounding communities. We hope to encourage students of all ages to discover their own voice and forge connections with the world around them.

The Natural Science Kits are available to loan to educators in Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties. The kits investigate the local ecology of the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion from birds and mammals to streams and forests. Each kit revolves around student-centered, hands-on activities and contains unique biological specimens for students to explore.
Local educators may check out Natural Science Kits for free. Kits are reserved on a first come, first served basis and may be kept by educators for a two-week period. The Southern Oregon Education Service District (ESD) courier provides delivery to and from public schools in Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath counties. If the ESD courier does not serve your school or organization, you can pick up and return kits on campus at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The same is true if you are outside the three-county area served by our program.
Kits are available during the SOU academic year; roughly October 1st-June 10th. The SEEC office will try its best to accommodate other requests.
